Meera Lee produces some really amazing works as an illustrator + designer from the east coast. I really dig her natural/organic work and color pallete. So let’s get on with the interview!
Where are you from: the east coast, new jersey! always near city & suburb, mountain & ocean.
Before starting a project: i write down notes on post-its and sigh a few times. i think way too much before i begin working and disregard all of my ideas during the process.
First job as an illustrator: portraits! drawing replications of people’s faces & pets is responsible for a lot of my early work.
Craziest thing you’ve done during a project: i have worked on a project for many hours and days only to trash the entire thing completely and rework it hours before a deadline. i wouldn’t say my best work is always done under pressure, but i have surprised myself a few times.
Tunes while working: lots of radiohead and wilco, bits of paul simon and sigur ros.
Favorite place on earth: i don’t know if i’ve discovered that yet, but i was awfully happy in florence, italy.
Last object you bought: a ball & claw bitters bottle to hold all my secrets in.
If you illustrate a book, what would the title be: WE
Technology or handmade: handmadehandmadehandmade. i find myself wanting to create digital work since it seems to be what everyone is looking for these days, but i can’t let go of my pens and pencils no matter how hard i try.
Favorite toy as a kid: i had a dog doll that looked like a rabbit. i called it my baby and dragged it around by one ear. the ear eventually fell off.
Coffee or Tea: tea, please.
Favorite Blogs: i really adore carson ellis and find her work very inspiring: www.carsonellis.com/blog.
Candyman: nightmares.
Heroes: people who MAKE IT WORK.
Words of advice: carve out the time to perfect your craft. try new ideas and don’t be afraid to kill off the ones that aren’t working. let go.
