I’ve have had the pleasure to interview talented spanish illustrator Mar Hernandez (aka Malota) her skills go from art to printmaking, graphic design and even music, and her client list includes very prominent brands.
I’ve been a fan of her work for a while so I’m pretty excited of getting her kind answers for us all.
Where are you from?
I was born in Jaen, a small andalusian city in the south of Spain, and grew up in Yecia, another small city a little bit more in the north. I’m currently living in Valencia, a city in the east of Spain.
I consider myself a world-citizen, although I love the city I live in, I enjoy traveling and learning from lifestyles from around the world.

Before starting a project…
I feel enthusiastic, because every project is a new way to go where I’ll possibly learn many new things.
First job as an illustrator?
When I was a Little girl, my mother bought me a small sketchbook and said: “please draw a sun!”

Craziest thing you’ve done during a project?
In my efforts to be happy, I’ve done many crazy things that are related with intuitive and visceral acts even when rationality dictates otherwise… all those crazy things have been worthwhile.
Tunes while working…
There are too many, I could’nt pick just a few ones.

Favorite place on earth?
The place where I’m happy.
Last object you bought was…
A calligraphic pens.
If you illustrate a book, what would the title be?
“If I illustrate a book, what would the title be?” …I think that’s a good title
Technology or handmade?
Both.

Favorite toy as a kid?
A pencil (and still is)
Coffee or Tea?
Both
Heroes…
I really don’t like the popular concept of ‘hero’, I prefer those anonymous heroes that most of people don’t know, like that mother who struggles to raise their children in values, or baker who has a passion for his work and works hard all night to cook the bread we eat, or the friend who listens when you need it … these are true heroes to me.

Words of advice…
Live to be happy. Everything else is not too important.
